Hatch
Show Print
June 9 - August 15, 2001
Throughout
the first half of this century, Hatch Show Print was one of six
leading printers of publicity posters for Country Western music
shows, circuses and other forms of regional entertainment. For many
decades, these gigantic posters could be seen slapped up on barns,
buildings and fences across the South. All of the type was hand
drawn and hand carved onto huge wooden blocks, creating incredible
type forms that are bold, boxy and unique. Original posters and
make-readies from Hatch Show Print will be on display at the Spur
Propaganda Gallery, Baltimores only gallery dedicated to the
graphic arts. In addition, Graphic Designer and Managing Director
of Hatch Show Print, Jim Sherraden will be on hand to give an old
fashioned slide show a discuss his book Hatch Show Print:
The History of a Great American Poster Shop which he co-authored
with Elek Horvath and Paul Kingsbury.
